‘Kapit Bisig Para Sa Ilog Pasig’ Launches 'Run for Pasig River 11.20.2011'

After breaking the Guiness World Record for footrace via the 10.10.10 Run for Pasig River, ABS-CBN Foundation’s Kapit Bisig Para sa Ilog Pasig (KBPIP) is now gearing up for this year’s biggest eco-footrace, the “Run for the Pasig River 11.20.2011.”

Representatives from schools, companies, armed services, government agencies and communities gathered at the ABS-CBN Foundation Building on January 28 to witness the launch and to pledge their support for the event.

ABS-CBN Foundation managing director Gina Lopez also presented the Guinness World Record certificate for the most number of participants in a racing event. With 116,086 runners in the official count, the 10.10.10 run easily beat the record previously held by the 1988 “Bay to Breakers” run in San Francisco, USA.

For a country that has been colonized for 400 years, to do this run in magnificence and peace is a great achievement,” Lopez said. “If we are to do the run again and again, this will be a major force in making the river clean,” she added

The 10.10.10 run was organized to raise consciousness for the rehabilitation of the river and its tributaries. Proceeds of the 10.10.10 Run for the Pasig River will be used to rehabilitate Estero de San Miguel, one of the five tributaries behind Malacañang that flow into the Pasig River.

Through KBPIP, ABS-CBN Foundation and its partners have focused their energies in rehabilitating Estero de Paco, a 2.9-kilometer tributary of the Pasig River in Manila. To date, the project has resettled 1,216 families to Calauan, Laguna, introduced remediation technologies for water quality improvement, trained community volunteers for the River Warriors program and shared sound waste management practices with communities.

Lopez urged everyone to take a stand and join the run. “There is nothing that can stand in the way of a people united for a noble cause,” she said.

Last year’s race organizers - Eric Imperio, Darryl De Leon, Rio Dela Cruz and Thumbie Remigio - who were also present during the launch, will take charge of the Run for the Pasig River 11.20.2011, which will be held at the SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City.
