Kapuso Network Snags Top Spot Nationwide

ABS-CBN may soon lose its claim as the national ratings leader. If it doesn’t shape up. The Kapuso network sealed its leadership in Mega Manila last January and in the recent NUTAM data that covers the entire Philippines, GMA Network showed upward ratings trend, and in fact, displaced ABS-CBN in both audience share and people rating.

As a matter of fact, GMA Network has become the no.1 network, according to data supplied by the independent research group AGB Nielsen, with 33.4 average audience share, 0.7 higher than the Kapamilya’s 32.7. In the people rating category, the Kapuso network soared slightly, 0.1 higher than ABS-CBN. GMA Network scored 6.6 versus ABS-CBN’s 6.5.

The data cover the period Jan. 10 to 25.

From September 2003, the Kapuso station has become th favorite network among TV households in Mega Manila, giving the Kapamilya difficult time to regain its lead held in 16 years.

Can the Kapuso network finally claim it’s the no. 1 network in the entire archipelago?

If the figures we have right now continue in the coming months, the Kapamilya network might just settle in the second spot.

The Kapamilya network’s bosses could be in panic mode these days. Last Monday, it piloted Mutya, a material based upon Pablo S. Gomez’s komiks serial. It’s fantasy, and the reading that launch is giving us is the network is going back to a format that once gave it considerable lead in the ratings race not too long ago.

But these days, the Kapuso network seems to have refined the format and is winning new audiences with its two new series launched this month—Dwarfina and Machete.

How about the Pangilinan-led TV5? Despite the recent multi-million investment to push the channel, TV5 remains a far third. It was 17.6 points behind GMA in audience share with only 15.8 points; and 3.5 points behind GMA in people rating with only 3.1.

Not even the romance between Willie Revillame and Shalani Soledad being cooked up by the Revillame spinners can give the fledgling network enough teeth to bite ABS-CBN, more so GMA Network.
